In the last year of his life, Franz Kafka finds love, intimacy, and acceptance with the worldly Dora Diamant, a Polish Jewish woman, despite his poor health and overbearing family. Their paths serendipitously cross in 1923 on the Baltic coast. After exchanging notes and a sweet rendezvous on the beach, their great love story takes off. Though stricken by tuberculosis, the 40-year-old Czech writer of enigmatic stories about guilt, isolation, and anxiety, suddenly faces the unthinkable: happiness. After their instantaneous attraction, the two move to Berlin together, but Franz’s health deteriorates rapidly and he must relocate to a sanatorium in Austria, where Dora joins him, bringing joy to his final days.
THE GLORY OF LIFE, adapted from an acclaimed book by German writer Michael Kumpfmüller, highlights this joyful period, enveloping viewers in their affection and capturing not just the inner life of the literary legend but a fragile, exquisite love story for the ages.
